iOS 27 Photo Tools: Clean Up, Extend and Reframe

Three tools, three different kinds of change

Apple says iOS 27 adds Spatial Reframing and Extend, while upgrading the existing Clean Up tool. Clean Up removes a selected distraction and fills the gap. Extend generates space beyond the original frame. Spatial Reframing goes further: you drag the apparent viewpoint and the system creates only the parts needed to support that shift.

That distinction matters. None of these tools can discover detail the camera never captured. They generate a plausible visual answer. 🐰 I find them most useful for rescuing an awkward crop, straightening a horizon or removing a small interruption—not for rewriting the meaning of a documentary image.

It also helps to choose the least invasive tool. If an ordinary crop fixes the composition, there is no reason to generate new scenery. If a blemish can be removed without changing a person or place, Clean Up may be enough. Spatial Reframing is the largest creative step of the three and deserves the closest comparison with the untouched file.

Watch the edges before admiring the centre

Creator demos often show the finished image at normal phone size, where errors are easy to miss. Zoom into hands, jewellery, lettering, railings, reflections and repeated patterns. These are places where generated pixels may bend, duplicate or contradict the original scene. Compare several options instead of accepting the first result.

For Extend, check whether light direction and perspective remain consistent. For Clean Up, look for smeared texture around the removed object. With Spatial Reframing, compare the generated side of the image with a real landmark or architectural line. A result can look attractive without being geometrically accurate.

Faces deserve another pass at full size. A tool may preserve the main subject but quietly alter someone in the background, remove part of a bag or invent an unreadable sign. Export the result and inspect it outside the editor too; the small preview, editing overlay and phone brightness can disguise flaws that become obvious on a larger screen.

Availability, limits and disclosure

Apple’s official iOS 27 announcement lists supported Apple Intelligence devices and says the features are available for developer testing before a wider fall release. Availability can still vary by device, language, region, software version and account. Some image-generation functions may also have daily limits because they use server models.

Apple says photos edited with these AI tools receive a hidden SynthID watermark. That technical marker is useful, but it does not replace plain-language disclosure when an edit changes the apparent scene. If the image is used for journalism, insurance, evidence, product condition or a public claim, keep the original and state what was altered.

A five-minute test before using the result ✨

Duplicate the photo first. Try one tool at a time, then toggle between the edit and the original at 100 per cent zoom. Ask four questions: Did the subject’s identity change? Was any text invented? Did the background gain an object that was never there? Would another person misunderstand the event because of the edit?

If the answer to the last question is yes, use the original or label the edit clearly. For casual holiday shots and social crops, these tools can save a composition that feels slightly off. Their best use is not pretending the camera saw more—it is helping you make a deliberate, reversible edit while remembering where the real pixels end.

Keep the original file and an edited copy rather than repeatedly saving over one version. A simple filename such as photo-extended or photo-cleanup makes the change easy to find later. If you share both, viewers can appreciate the creative edit without mistaking generated background for a recovered part of the moment.
